The history of our school

Empangeni Christian School began in 1988 using the A.C.E (Accelerated Christian Education) curriculum.

The three principles, knowledge, understanding and wisdom that Dr Howard the founder of A.C.E  gave were adopted as the motto for the school badge.

Knowledge is the gathering and acquiring of information.
Understanding is the skills required to use the knowledge.
Wisdom is “how to live”.

• 1987 was spent training teachers, securing a venue and enrolling the first pupils.  It was not easy to start an independent Christian school. Past government’s unwillingness to register the school, put Pastors and Principals under threat of being arrested, but through much negotiation with the Department of Education the school was finally registered.
• In 1988 the school started at the Assemblies of God building in Warbler Road, with Mrs Shelley Bain as the principal, 7 staff members and 32 learners ranging from Grade 1 to Grade 7.
• Empangeni Christian School has two sport houses: Alpha which is red and Omega which is blue.
• 1989 saw the now school office and preschool building being built.
• In 1994 the school changed from ACE to the National Curriculum.
• In 1995 and 1997 the prefabs, which are the classrooms for Grade 1 to Grade 7, were purchased and erected.
• 1995 – 2004 Empangeni Christian School was both a primary and a high school.
• Empangeni Christian School has had seven principals: Mrs Bain, Mrs Simonis (acting), Mrs McCabe, Mrs Hidden, Mr Nelson, Mrs Ras (acting), Mr Cito and Mrs Raman.
• Empangeni Christian School as a Private Independent Christian School continues to offer affordable quality education to the City of Umhlathuze.
